Oh cousin, here I go.
I like Fate. Though I acknowledge its flaws, it is the only route that really works as a stand-alone story without modifying content or omitting vital information. Its main issues are its shortness and the fact that half of its length is spent in loredumps. Saber has the best chemistry with Shirou by far, supported by the fact that you have to go out of your way to not interact or care about her in order to get UBW True, and HF's best ending is a bad end that has her as the main focus (SLH).
UBW is a chuu2 story, except the edgelord is the adult instead of the actual teenager, and relies too much on Fate's characterisation, in addition to the reader being a teenager, to have any true impact.
HF is a mess. It suffers from horrible pacing, is written in a way that actively makes the reader dislike the heroine, stars a damsel in distress/mass murderer with no agenda in a story about people willing to do anything to achieve their goals, and only works as a tragedy, leaving a horrible taste in the mouth as the last route of the VN with the nonsense that is its True End.
If I had my way, the ideal route would be an expanded Fate that incorporates the key elements of UBW and HF without the unnecessary edge. Basically DEEN Fate done right.
