If you want to be treated nicely in Japan, not being assaulted by the police officers and looked down upon as the dirty gaijin, this thing is the key to success.

I was walking past one of those natives-only stores when the shop keeper came out and having seen the fiddle box I was carrying, asked me if I played the violin. I took my fiddle out and started playing. People stopped in their way to listen, and by the time I was finished I had gathered a whole crowd. They were standing there silently, awe-struck, and when I finished they gave me applause, whistled and the shop keeper invited me to his shop. I was surprised at this sudden friendliness and how good an audience they are.

I'm aware the shop keeper probably just wanted me in for some advertisement, still, it's better than being yelled at.
