Actually the more I refresh my memory the more I realize the messenger boy thing (like, actually appearing young(er) at will) is a non-canon deviation associated with later creative writers (similar to the aging-backward thing). It was likely him at that young age, not a de-aged transition (although he could change his appearance either way). But his time with King Arthur was essentially that of an old man's wise advice.

A young Merlin isn't as far-fetched as it would appear, but certainly only in the less-experienced sense, and not the advisor-to-Arthur sense.

He would have been a handsome old man. But make no mistake Jews are a hairy race. Also he lived multiple decades longer in Jewish sources than historical sources (ninety years, at least), which seems to be a thing going for legendary Bible names in-general; and by that I mean people like Noah and Methuselah lived for multiple hundreds of years. Moses was 120-ish. Their wrinkled veneration was apparent. This emphasis on longevity was a sign of kingliness and antediluvian lineage, perfect for the wizard-king.
