I'm a little glad it turned out the way it did though. From the perspective of others else interacting with Yukari, it's a harrowing experience. Her true nature is her best kept secret that only a few have peeked behind the curtain to see, that being Suika who knows what she is and Eirin who has some suspicions sneak up only now. It could just be the stress clouding her judgment, but I don't think Ran has a clue either and bought into the illusion that her master is this powerful mastermind.
Now it does take the edge off of her character from a reader's perspective, but it feels real to the characters and she still might follow the threats through with the god complex she has. What it added to the overall plot is just confirmation of her reasoning and that she's a terrible person, and that her secondary motive is to make a little gappy. Though she'll probably raise her daughter into a replacement for Ran.
Besides, what is Touhou without a little levity.
