the average salary man is not allowed to leave work until his boss leaves. so if the boss still has work or is just chilling in his office because he doesn't want to go home to the wife then you have to stay in your cubical or what ever system your office has and pretend to be productive even if you have no work left to do.

also with the drinking partys you also don't have much of a choice when it comes to attending them seeing as you lose face if you say no.

like you said i would much rather have 8 hours of actual work than 12 hours of doing nothing for no extra pay.

the idea of a salary based job sounds like hell anyway.
