What's wrong with variety?

You're going to introduce your friends and/or family to your new girlfriend, she's clearly not human, and somehow you've neglected to mention this. How do they respond?

For those who need more setting details: say that we make contact with another world, full of monsters and other fantasy things; we work out how to open portals between our worlds so there's plenty of trade and communication but, as yet, little migration. No magic anywhere.
