I would argue that the poor animation of Higurashi's 1st season ended up being a good thing. There's a charming jankiness to it like a low-budget indie film. It might just be my nostalgia talking Higurashi was one of the first anime I ever watched that wasn't on tv, but the way the animation falls apart in certain scenes inadvertently creates additional atmosphere.

The "crazy faces" the series is infamous for are sort of an extra clue to the nature of the insanity. As a character goes nuts, the art gets more weird and intense. The especially violent scenes like pic related, with their washed out colors and off-model characters, have a grimy, exploitative aesthetic to them like an eastern European horror movie. The story may have lost its emotional core in the transition, but they created a completely unique product that has yet to be matched. I've never seen another anime try and hit the same notes without turning into edgy yandere crap.
