You were in furiten then. Which basically means "you thought you had a yaku, but you didn't".
It occurs in 3 situations:
-You're playing a hand that only has yaku if it's closed (meaning that you didn't call pon, kan or chi, sans some specifics)
-You don't have a fucking yaku (for example you're going for prevalent wint yakuhai, you're East, but you've got a triplet of West like a retard)
-You have previously discarded a tile that you would need to complete your yaku, and you can't call Ron on other player's discard, which means that you can only win by drawing the tile you need yourself, so by Tsumo.
Alternatively you weren't in furiten, but took too long and kept dealing your tiles to other people, so they just got yaku before you.
