And they both lead to the same place. Just one of them is more explicit. Messing a few minor scenes around in a different medium doesn't throw this into a different space where one is wrong.

Obviously I accept the manga as Ryukishi's official answer to the VN, but I like how the VN itself allows you fill in the details however you want. I consider the manga a retelling of the story with more defined answers, rather than the exact same story. It's still practically identical, but there are some differences, like the Erika vs Battler fight in EP8.

I always thought that the very first phone call (before the start of the game) was from Yasu and all the others were from Battler. I really dislike how Daisuke Ono plays the man every single time in the PS3 version, even thought it completely contradicts Natsuhi's description of the man's voice during the first phone call. How can you describe that as "a boy whose voice hasn't broken yet"? How can it be "too early to be sure that this person is a man"?

To me, this is more proof that Umineko was never meant to have voice acting in the first place. There is no way to do it without either fucking something up, forcing a certain interpretation where the original text was ambiguous or spoiling who the person talking actually is.

Also, while the voice acting is pretty great in general, I find Bern and Kanon's voices incredibly grating in certain scenes. I'd rather imagine the voices myself. That way, I can read at my leisure and the action scenes don't lose their impact. Voices make the fights feel too slow, break the immersion when you accidentally skip them mid-sentence and force the music to loop three times instead of just one. Awkward. Ryukishi didn't choose the length of the tracks or the length of the scenes with voice acting in mind.

I hope this is sufficient. I'm still optimistic that EP 2 will turn things around, somehow. But the only way I can see that working is if all the gauntlet knights except the six main ones become complete background characters.
