Horizontal tile in the pool (and 1000 points stick next to it): Calling riichi.

Horizontal tile in the Pon/Chi: indicates the neighbor you stole it from. When the horizontal tile is at the left, it's your left neighbor, at the middle: the guy in front of you, at the right: the guy at your right.

By the way, the same applies to Kan. Pic related is a closed Kan (you had the 4 tiles in your hand before calling Kan), but when you're completing a Kan from another person's discard, or promoting a Pon to a Kan (you've drawn the fourth tile after ponning), you have to put the tile horizontally accordingly.
