Well, guess I got an answer why they didn't do this now, they need it as filler for this instead. I've seen this coming from miles away, but it doesn't feel any less bullshit than if it had come from nowhere. Erika's character was complete enough as the girl who couldn't become a Hoshimori and finally came at peace a bit when she settled as support/school nurse, this will feel incredibly cheap no matter what excuse they'll pull.
