Actually, no. You didn't learn by yourself anymore than you learn physics by yourself through the study of other people's work. Look into feral children - they learn through their "parents". People don't learn to walk on their own, they need a guiding hand for that. What about the aforementioned alcoholics and drug addicts? Do they learn by themselves without any outside help? Is their lives better for it?

Taoism tries to get a free ride by leaving it up to the individual to reach enlightenment by themselves. But if this were possible, there would be no need of others' experiences to guide us.

Of course, the notion that the here and now is only a drop in the ocean of existence is alien to taoists. That's why you put such importance on immortality over reincarnation, on desires and accomplishments, and on the importance of lolcats and wanking. (Well, okay, maybe those last two have some worth...)

Of course, if your philosophy is so dissonant as to denouncing rejecting humanity and glorify transcending it in the next sentence, I'm not sure what more I can add. So here's some picture of Keine. She looks adorable and we all love her very much.
