Personally it's the way people act in the comments that's really over the top to me. Checking out for 5min can bring a smile, but I couldn't stand doing that daily for hours.
With Vocaloid the characters are 2D so we're, for the most part, freely able to morph the way we perceive them by selectively projecting our selves onto them.
With a virtual idol you're looking at a person acting in front of you.

I realize as I'm typing this though I'm biased "by being the kind of person I am", and some other kind of people do need this human feeling in what they worship. I could imagine them retorting that it's more thrilling to follow "a real" person's path, which contains more random factors, as opposed to follow a fandom which (now) evolves at a regular pace and doesn't offer many thrilling changes. I assume a huge amount of people into hololive are the sort of people who will ride a lot of other trends when they show up.
