Every unit has a weakness (can be erased with some items). Units can be strong against any or all of the six types. A type advantage means that the unit gains +30 Hit, +30 Evd, and +30 Counter. Two units can both be strong against each other, which means the net change in the battle is that both gain +30 counter.

In the image, Vandain is mechanical with strengths against mechanical, magical, and demon. The vampire is a demon with a strength against normal. Vandain has a type advantage, so he'll get +30 Hit, Evd, and Counter if he attacks.
