Even the eternally dense Keiichi realizes early on during Tatari that Satoko is still dependent on her brother, even if he's no longer around. Although she thinks that she's independent, she's obviously still extremely dependent on others, just like how despite all of Rena's efforts to pretend she is happy by hau'ing and obsessing over kyute shit doesn't actually make her happy (it never really sat well with me how Rena's whole fake constructed persona is presented as just a quirky gimmick most of the time).

And from looper Satoko's perspective, Satoko's Minagoroshi development happened to a different Satoko. Anime Satoko would also only learn about this after she's already obsessed with Rika, while manga Satoko tries to stay in Hinamizawa more, only to find that Satoshi's condition always worsens and loses all hope of him ever recovering, leading to the deterioration of her own mental state.
