The truth is that on the moon the soldier caste are simple Lunarian humans modified from birth with an extrasensory spinal enhancement. This unit is attached at the base of the spine and contains multiple sensory fiber-optic antenna which spread in a globular fashion producing a puff shape. This enhancement is both necessary for modern combat and to mark soldiers from citizens.
Cadets are later further modified by having a large appendage attached to their heads, marking them as trained combatants, and preventing them from deserting their posts. One eared soldiers found outside of the academy are court martialed. The number of wrinkles in this 'ear' represents their rank, much like chevrons on an Earth military insignia.
On graduation and entry into full soldiering service a second ear is attached, and new creases are added as the soldier gains rank.
