Finding out that you are a brain in a jar must be horrifying. Everything you can experience with your five senses is an illusion created by the matrix and your real body is a simple brain in a jar, incapable of moving or interacting with anything except the matrix. You can't even know the true nature of the real world. If someone decided to destroy you, you'd be incapable of defending yourself. If someone decided to disconnect you from the matrix, you'd go insane trapped in your own mind without even the ability to kill yourself. If they decided to change the matrix into an experience of constant physical pain and horror, you'd be literally living in Hell. They could even reset your memories after each experience and make you relive the fear of being a kidnapping victim about to be brutally executed over and over again. Or make you relive the worst dentist visit imaginable for years on end. You'd be at their mercy no matter where you run inside the matrix. And there's also the possibility that all of human history is a lie created for this matrix and your captors in the real world are horrifying insectoid aliens. Humanity never existed in the first place. You are just the disembodied brain of some fucked up creature.
