I thought about generals as well but I don't know how you'd really deal with them. There's always going to be people who want to talk about idols/AKB/kancolle/vns/etc. who will latch onto generals of some sort as a place to go to and the material is certainly relevant to /jp/.

I guess the main issue I have with them is that they inevitably just keep going on and on because there people think there needs to be one up at all times even when fucking nothing of note is going to be discussed and you just end up with this spergy subcommunity within the board circlejerking over some subject that no one else cares about. Even if you outright ban the phrase "general"/"thread number #xxx" in thread titles you'd still get them going on in some way or another - people would just call it something different but it would still be the same shit. Minimum character limits on OPs could help but you'd likely undermine a lot of fun threads doing that.

I think the lax posting rules would help reduce generals though as people would feel more confident in funposting stuff related to whatever interest rather than being pigeonholed into "approved threads" and I think it's ultimately a cultural thing you'd have to influence a bit - just chastise people for creating lazy general threads and push them to post something more purposeful or interesting related to that shit rather than just "Idol General #146".
