Sure, the main deal with AV Open was companies submitting works especially for the event like a contest rather than a more generic all-encompassing awards ceremony like the Fanza Awards.
There were usually different quirks and categories depending on the year and all entries would be given the same code prefix; in the early days it was OPEN- but then it became AVGP-/AVGL- when they had to rebrand the whole event to the AV Grand Prix for a few years after some fraud scandal in '07. They then resurrected the AV Open name in '14 and used the AVOP- code prefix. Sadly, they haven't hosted it since 2018 and didn't give any reason...
Since it was set-up as a contest (with a cash prize etc) and because of the range of categories and overall format that often changed from year to year, the movies associated with the AV Open and its iterations are known to be really imaginative and ambitious and often pushed the envelope in terms of content and even cast size for maximum impact
