If translating is your job then you're going to have to translate things you don't like eventually. If you can't do your job properly you should find a new one. No sane person is going to defend Dovac for half-assing his work on Maitetsu because he hates the game, why should translators get a free pass? If you want to be in a position where you can get away with translating only the things you want, there's always fan translation. Perhaps it speaks to the quality of the average visual novel, anime, video game, etc. translator that they can only even manage mediocrity when they're not only paid but emotionally invested in what they're doing.
