I didn't finish the series (read up until ange's episode which was six or seven), then I dropped it before starting the next one, but I have to agree that the series does some pirouettes and somersaults as it goes forward in episodes.

I still think Episode 1 was the best of them all precisely because it explored that murder mystery angle while still omitting enough information from the reader to ground the whole thing in reality. A bunch of people come to an island eyeballing the family's inheritance, and there's just no way it can be split between everybody, so people start dying in gruesome ways. All the while this weird legend about a golden witch hangs in the air, which gives the whole thing a really interesting mystique vibe.

I still think that point where Battler is presumably the last one alive in the mansion, and he rushes towards the entrance to supposedly face off against the killer, then the episode suddenly ends, really made the whole thing come on its own. You never get to see if it was Beatrice or if it was someone else in the island. So fucking good. Then the other episodes came and introduced parallel universes and wacky cast members in ridiculous attires and tons of alternate scenarios that... it just kinda lost its way, I think. Which sucks because the first episode is that well written in my opinion.
