There's shitposting and there's shitposting, /jp/-related threads that look retarded are still different from pages of pointless spam and completely unrelated garbage.

I think a lot of it is not so much that shitposting is a cultural treasure in and of itself, so much as that back then people really weren't afraid to just throw shit out there and see if it sticks. The way you listen to some people talk about making threads today you'd think they were preparing to submit their master's thesis.
