The basic program itself is easy, but the trouble is teaching it shit. Most AIML chat clients are only so successful because they run corpus analyses from millions of different users of the client to formulate reasonably realistic results.

This is why emulating people who have more resources and are generally more experienced than you is so important. If you insist on a Touhou allegory, think of it like watching replays - you don't copy exactly, but you watch to know what to do in general and improve your own skill.
