That's something in general with monster girls. The exotic monster parts aren't used as much as the regular woman parts, and less think outside the box with them. Think of how Yukari's gaps are expressed, often simple teleportation and not often do you see something clever done with them.
But when they're done well, it's good. For example, there's a move Ran has in Fantasy Maiden Wars where her tails just infinitely extend and become projectiles to trap and hit the target. FMW in general has a lot of cool moves that make good use of character's powers.

What are some doujins that feature Ran as a central character? I only recall some comedies that were more about Chen and the one where she kills Reimu.
