Possibly. Or they were turned by a nice gent/lady, or someone doing something nice for them. There's also the possibility that they were forcefully turned.

What amazes me however was the skill of these Monster Hunters in Genosokyo. Christians or not they are taking on creatures with stupid high relaxes, strengths, and super natural powers while they carry swords/daggers, revolvers, holy water, a bible, knowledge on how to deal with some monsters, and average human fitness.

I wouldn't mind doing monster hunting in Gensokyo.
