Suffered from the popularity. It's not a game that appeals to the mainstream, and when something like that becomes too popular, it attracts attention from hordes of people who wouldn't like it - and they express as much. Even if you're not experiencing popularity backlash, there are legitimate reasons (or something like that) to dislike it.

For example, lots of people hate indie games just as a rule of thumb. They have low production values and they don't feel like whatever else the game offers makes up for it. The feeling that they could've made millions of dollars off an RPG Maker game frustrates them.

Another example would be some of the overtones. There's quite a few gay characters in Undertale, you actively get two gay couples together. The few straight relationships are typically in shambles and it's usually shown as being the man's fault. This isn't to mention the fact that Toby's kind of furry and furries love the characters. Toby also encouraged his fans to support BLM.

Another example would be the fact that it borrows so heavily from Mother. Some people don't like seeing shit like that. If you're a Mother fan, wouldn't you be a little upset that Undertale is so much bigger outside Japan?

Another example is that it's a game famous for its secondary traits (story, writing, music), not gameplay. There's a growing distaste for that. Games are something you play, not watch/read.

Another example is the fact that the game really chastises you for killing monsters. Even killing one monster makes it so you can't finish the game. And no, the neutral route isn't a real route, it's just the pacifist route without the ending. That really sucks. If you didn't pick up on what the game wanted you (but didn't force you) to do early on, you now essentially have to waste another 4-6 hours playing the game again. The game even remembers your previous playthroughs, it won't let you forget your "sin" of playing it like a normal RPG.

To add to that last point, I find the concept of the game a little shaky. I get what Toby was going for: he played RPGs as a kid, loved the monsters and hated that he had to kill them to progress. The game really hammers it home that you're terrible for killing virtual monsters, but virtual monsters exist TO be killed. We all have a desire to hunt and fight and etc., and video games let us do that without actually harming anyone. To then tell us harming THEM is bad, too, is a little obnoxious.

I don't think any of the Holos who play the game will feel this way, though. You can see a lot of this stuff from far away.
