Because my native language is bumfuck irrelevant. I'm going to get nowhere with it.
However I did translate anime with a friend of mine and I think we did quite a good job compared to other subbers, but I'm sure we did a bunch of rookie mistakes too.
Also, I know this (pretty obnoxious) dude who is said to have regularly done japanese to english manga translations for an international group, so I don't think it's impossible. I can't verify how much of it is pure bragging though.

Same here. Many people have to learn a language through another one.
There are just no japanese textbooks or the likes available in my language. Not that they're really needed after the first baby steps though.
