No, that's incorrect. It's based on who reproduces. If the average height in 1950 is 5'9" and the average height in 1970 is 5'10", that means people are selecting for height. That's how you gather this data. You don't just fucking ask people how tall their partners have been.

You're pointing out how a trait at the extreme end of the distribution is undesirable while ignoring the fact that the maximum level of desirability lies on that same half of the spectrum. To give you an example: women don't like giant men. Most women would not want to date a man that's 7' tall. According to you, that means women don't select for height and actually prefer short men! That's wrong. They like men who are about 6' tall, which is above average. Likewise, men select women who are LESS confident than average. Do they select absolute nutcases? No, but men on average would prefer that to super confident women, the same way women would actually prefer the 7' tall guy to a 5' tall guy.
