Anime characters, like all mythological entities, are manifestations of the collective unconscious; they are projections of archetypal forms that are idealist in nature and are given form, much like the Demiurge gave form to sparks of Pleroma, by artists. As ideal forms, or archetypes, tying their "existence" to "physical existence" is a bit of a mistake, in the same way that tying mathematical constants to the particular language that we use to express them is a mistake -- pi would be the same, even in the absence of a word to describe it, or people to describe it, for instance, and in the same way my waifu exists a pure, ideal, mathematical form in the Platonic sense. Even the artistic renderings of her are mere imitations of her Form which is perfect and eternal. A perfect square never "physically exists", nor a circle, nor pi, nor the quadratic equation, but the physical world is ordered according to these forms, as fog is molded to the curves of a valley in the fall. Which is more "real": the thing which is ordered according to an ideal, or the ideal to which things are ordered? The universe itself will one day grow old and dissolve into nothing more than photons dispersed infinitely thin throughout a cold, dead reality, but pi and my waifu will always remain pure and perfect, with no respect either to decay or age.

The iceberg is a bad metaphor. The human mind isn't static, unconscious and conscious are permanently exchanging information. Freud kinda treated the unconscious as a trash bin for traumatic experiences and the like, though.

Oh dear, someone's let Sigmund out of the attic. Fetch Titchner, and tell him to bring the net.
