>Iwakami: It started off with Aniplex working with Type-Moon to bring Fate to anime form with Fate/Zero. And not just the Fate series. In 2007, we did The Garden of Sinners movies. After we were done with Fate/Zero, we were talking with Takeshi Takeuchi of Type-Moon about a new way to develop Fate, and a smartphone game was one of the ideas that we came up with. So Type-Moon started working on Fate/Grand Order as one of the official numbered titles in the Fate series.

>Takeuchi: Many anime studios wanted to make Fate/Zero into an anime, but as far as actually doing that, I couldn't feel very excited about the idea. It was a story that came into being out of the love and respect that Urobuchi-san had for Fate/stay night, and was designed to deepen the enjoyment a reader could get out of Fate. Adapting it into an anime might mean stepping on that love, and I didn't want to make something that didn't capture the feeling of the original novels.

>Nasu: Many anime fans want there to be a lot of cute bishoujo characters in the work, and while they work hard to meet those needs, Iwakami, an important producer at Aniplex, wasn't satisfied just by doing that. I suggested that he tackle Fate/Zero, a dark and serious story full of raw emotion. He had the resolve, and that's how they ended up adapting Fate/Zero.

There seems to have been a clear goal and concept in mind for the whole Nasuverse thing when it was just the early stuff like Fate/Stay Night and Tsukihime, and it was a mom and pop doujin circle with a strong cult following, but now ever since the Fate/Zero adaptation and especially FGO, Sony and it's money and producers are heavily involved in basically everything Type-Moon. They're arguably still in the process of transforming the brand into another soulless cash cow hype beast thing that can be retooled as necessary to maximize profit and mass appeal, and where voice actors and the music style can just be swapped out with the ones they prefer from their own labels, and that'll all still get by on branding and fanboy culture surrounding the property where the new age fans brought in from FGO just kind of don't give a shit as long as the designs and action set pieces are flashy.

Type-Moon's OG core people have very clearly lost a great deal of creative control over their own franchise regardless of how good or bad Nasu's ideas are these days anyway. When he writes stuff like Avalon La Fae, drawn out as it is, it's almost like there's a self contained within the story arc actual sense of purpose to the development of the scenario, but that's a pretty rare once in a decade occurrence it seems where it kind of helps when you return a bit to core concepts of a major characters storyline that have never really been done in that form and that people actually got into the franchise for to begin with and have been waiting years to see.

When one of his writers pointed out this contradicts lore he already wrote and sold in material books Nasu went "the FGO villain retconned that with his magic"
