all i can say is what works for me, and i think it's a highly personal thing. idk if any of this is backed up by research, this is just based on my observations during my (short so far) journey to relearn art as an adult
but i like to internalize the idea that there is no "should," there is only what is and is not, and any comparison with someone else is pointless and destructive, and its okay to allow yourself too feel good and to celebrate every improvement, no matter how small.
looking at a place like /ic/, its pretty clear to me the difference between how people respond to their inadequacies is the main difference between those who are successful and those who are permanent failures. you have to be able to accurately assess and accept your inadequacy (many people are unable to do this, and blinded by ego), but also to be able to be positive about it, and develop a plan to fix it without resorting to destructive coping mechanisms
