I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as a Ran, is in fact, Shiki/Ran, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, Ran plus Shiki. Ran is not a beast youkai unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning Kitsune system made useful by the shikigami connection, hyperintelligence and vital youkai components comprising a full shiki as defined by Yukari.
Many shikigami users run a modified version of the Ran system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of shikigami which is widely used today is often called “Ran”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the Ran system, developed by the Boundary Project. There really is a Kitsune, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
Ran is the kernel: the will in the beast youkai that allocates the youkai's resources to its master that it has accepted. The kernel is an essential part of a shiki, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a powerful enough master. The Kitsune is normally used in combination with the Ran shikigami connection: the beast youkai is basically Kitsune with Ran added, or Shiki/Ran. All the so-called “Ran”-type shikigamis are really shikigamis of Shiki/Ran.
