There are different approaches but I was using non-overfit models like based64 or based67 and slapping style loras that I liked.
Good approach used to be to look at catbox links posted on /h/ thread but now everyone uses NAI there too.

Assuming you're using A1111, install extensions such as controlnet, regional prompter, multidiffusion, tagcomplete

The issue with local models is that it's hard to fight its underlying 3D/realistic style so if you like flat colors that NAI generally has you're gonna struggle. It's also harder to make characters actually DO something or interact with each other. That's why usually local outputs are like "1girl is standing smiling with cool scenery"
