No, it was always about an external "unknown" causing conflict, which eventually was revealed to be a political conspiracy rather than the curse of village group speculated early in the story. I don't see why you think "magic" this time being the external force to be some kind of betrayal.

There's way more character stuff than that though. Yeah, you hate his direction with Satoko, so you probably didn't enjoy this, but for example, this scene with her talking about her loops

just confusing Rika, since she doesn't know about them but also mirroring how Rika felt about Satoko in her own loops (brought up in the next page). There's a lot of detail to the characters.

Obviously, these last few chapters were heavily Satoko focused, but when everyone gets their time they feel like actual characters (which you can also see if you go back to the Gou manga). So, being in a conflict and eventually resolving it has weight.
