Also, don't forget Rika is already an elementary school student during Himatsubushi which takes place in 78. That pretty much forces her to be 11 by 83 and Satoko obviously isn't younger than her.

Deen for whatever reason just made Rika and Satoko look super young and lots of other character designers then mimicked them (pic not related, rato who drew the original console art actually makes them look their age. You can stil see Rena and Mion are older than Rika and Satoko, but the difference clearly isn't that big).

>It's only with the advent of the new, awful sequel that their ages being 13-14 were set in stone

Nah, that's just when the Western fandom learned about it. The later console arcs for example already had explicit comments about the age issue (Natsumi is a first year high schooler and talks about Mion being younger than her) several older manga like Kokoroiyashi also had explicit comments about their grades (Mion outright says she's studying for a high school entrance exam).

Really seems like R07 was worried about censorship problems due to using middle schoolers. I think there's an interview where he outright talks about how the Console port would make them high schoolers. In the end though, aside from the live action adaptations, it never seemed to be an issue.
