Fun fact, the title of the film is named after Kitano's father. The story was more grounded but not for lack of the good ol' Kitano themes. Apparently Kitano made Kikujiro because he was fed up of being pigeonholed as a violent filmmaker, so he transplanted his thug persona into a child's world and the result is one of his richest films. It's basically It‘s a reverse Kitano film, wherein he plays the emotional character for once.
>but I still consider early Kitano to be the greatest Japanese director
He's without a shadow of a doubt up there with such masterpieces like Sonatine, A Scene at the Sea, and Hanabi. Personally, Oshii Mamoru and Kitano Takeshi are the greatest to ever do it in Japan.
