Took 2 light carriers and 4 BBs and it lead me straight to 2-4 boss, beat them without any problems. I think the ships didn't even lose HP, besides one.
I think you need one weak ship that's not your mother ship.
I noticed the weakest ship gets nearly always heavily damaged in the first fight (often 1HP left) so that they can force people to buy repair fairies if they don't want to lose the ship in the boss fight.
To avoid this I only used BBs lately which couldn't get damaged but in 2-4 it deliberately avoided the boss because my ships were too strong.
