Damage is higher with the claymore than the spear. Shouldn't be too surprising since the dice of the claymore is better and so is the plus bonus attached to the dice(not counting blacksmith bonus). It's easier to hit enemies for almost 2 million unbuffed currently. Enemies in the void certainly feel like they're going down faster.

Pierce is nice to have but it's probably best appreciated once you start fighting enemies that actually have decent armor skill levels. Probably won't notice much against enemies that don't scale though. Pierce makes sure that most of the damage you do gets through. It can be very important for smaller dice weapons like the lightsaber but for bigger dice weapons you can still do decent damage even though some of that will get absorbed through the enemies defense. In the case of the claymore vs the spear the claymore does enough damage to still be fine without pierce.

In a previous thread an anon shared his findings about the damage weapons do. I found anon's graph and his info useful. >>17622698

The graph suggests that the claymore and the hammer have the highest damage dice of things of things you can craft. Claymore doesn't suffer from an accuracy penalty like the hammer though.
