Score multiplier is based on the green pickups you get from season releases and I think bullet clears after boss spells/non-spells. The more score multiplier you have, the easier it is to get extra lives and have more of a safety net for mistakes. The green pickups are worth more points the higher the season level when you erase the bullets. The main way of raising the multiplier is to get the season to level 5-6 and releasing in a place with a huge number bullets, but you can keep them as an panic button if you know a hard section is coming up. There's a lot of 1ccs to go through so you'll naturally discover the better release spots as you play the game more. I've had the most success with Spring in terms of getting the multiplier high due to its massive range.
