OP's diagram reminds me of a Foveon image sensor. It's an image sensor designed in the same way film is, with each layer picking up only certain colors. This gives somewhat more tones in the end image and because there's no need for an anti-aliasing filter, the sensor can resolve more detail from the image projected onto it, producing sharper images. The downside is that the company whose cameras use this sensor isn't very popular and I think they lack the money they need for proper research and development for the sensor because high ISO kills the image quality.
