Western civilization has been declining for as long as it has existed though. Sure, our technology and our power advances more and more, but our happiness continues to make a steady decline.

The western world is in a state now where a good portion of the population needs to be doped up on antidepressants just to keep them passive enough that they won't try to blow their brains out or jumping off a roof, yet our living conditions and technology is better than ever.

It's the technology and the price that we have to pay to maintain this technology that causes such a huge degree of unhappiness. We're advanced, but to maintain these advancements we need a workforce that is filled with people who do completely mindless work that has no meaning to them (cleaning the trash, maintaining the electricity, packing boxes, data entry, etc)

The incentive for doing this drone work is that they can use their paycheck to buy some shiny gadget and have a few hours of hollow escapism. It's really not that great of an incentive and that's why so many people are unhappy. Life is just bleak when the only thing you have to look forward to is getting drunk, staring at an ipad app, or watching some movie.

This is nothing new though. When the European colonists were first settling in the Americas many of their citizens would actually run away from the European settlements and join the Indians. The appeal of living that simple and free life was so strong that they were gladly throwing away all of the modern technology of that time period so that they could be with the natives and live a happier life.

I regret being born so late.

The world was so beautiful before we raped it. Just look at North America. So much untouched wilderness, an entire continent to explore and enjoy, and it was populated with an indigenous people with a fascinating culture that existed in the land for thousands of years without tearing it apart to build disgusting cities, railroads, factories, or all of the other filthy technology that turns the beauty of nature into concrete hellholes coated in smog.
