The VN explained everything very well and properly.

In a second reading through, the foreshadowing is so obvious it's just ridiculous really.

The problem is that, it was too difficult to understand and deciphrate every single plot point even then.

Serial Experiments Lain came to mind for a bit, since the presentation is just so crazy.

Actually, using an actual mystery title, the manga Soil from Kaneko comes to mind even more.

Soil is like Asano writing Umineko on drugs though.

In any case, he presented every single element about Yasu by the first 3 episodes, and the other episodes served as more and more revealing complements about the whole thing surrounding her.

The Episode 8 manga did a nice job taking all that content and making it fully explicit (and just to add a nice bonus, it even got us Confession of the Golden Witch, that is all that composes the story thus far in an actually readable non-symbolic format (which in my opinion both is a cool addition to the series, and kinda ruins a sweet point from the VN, which would be the game between the author and the readers, which was supposed to mean them discovering everything for themselves with the hints gave through the story).

That said, I have nothing against the manga, unlike many fans out there, but I do prefer the VN over it and its extra mystery layer in the mackerel cake the Seacats experience is.

So can we talk about the ending? not going to bother with spoilers after this one

Either Ange becomes the witch of Truth or the Witch of Resurrection. So I guess magic 100 exists? I feel like the way magic has ended in Umineko is a mistake. It is constantly used for torture and cruelty for no reason, the only exception being the Resurrection at the very end. Even Battler was full fucking witch at the end, delighting and sharing in a puzzle in which he and his family brutally murder everyone. I feel like the human element got lost in that.

If you take the endings at face value. It's possible to just construct a non-magical ending with what we have, although its pretty fucking depressing and probably not what the author intended.
