They turned out to be Horsetail worms, a common parasitic lifeform, one that attaches itself to large insects such as grasshoppers and crickets. The notion of them being common enough to the point of having a non latin name sent a shiver down my spine, but their behavior is what truly make me sick. Once they infect their hosts they grow inside it until they progress to their adult form. Afterwards they direct the host to a body of water and make it jump into it, they will then separate from its host which will drown in the process as the fully grown parasite continues it's nightmarish life cycle. Luckily these fiends seem to only attach itself to insect as vertebrate beings are too complex for their likings, humans can stil ingest them by swimming or drinking from still bodies of water. While I have since calmed down slightly I feel as though the knowledge of such a thing existing has left a permanent scar in my soul. Lovecraft was right, we were better off not knowing what nightmares reside around us in this cursed reality...
