Today the morning mists made visibility quite poor, to the extent that some of the villagers even warned me about going outside, probably worried that I might get lost. I'm none too worried though! My only talent is that as long as I can point to something on a map, I can always find my way to it! Just have to make sure I don't trip and get injured or run headlong into a tree.

「Hey, hey, *hiccup*, what's a uhhh, human doing out all this way while my mist's all about?」a voice called to me.

Turning, I saw the issuer of the foreign words seemed to be a small girl, her head reaching no higher then my waist, save for her horns, which reached a bit higher. Wait, little girls don't have horns.

「Ah you gotta a big load on your back don'tcha? You off to visit that rotten girl in the Shrine huh? 」She said, taking a swig of what I assume was alcohol. 「Hey, hey, why don't we compare huh? I'll give you a sip and you show me what the shrine maiden kicks back huh? 」She asked, putting forth her jug.

I only caught 'Shrine', but it seemed like she was offering a trade. I wasn't totally up to date on Japanese folklore, but I think I'm supposed to offer something to drink in return? Well, suppose being courteous couldn't hurt, so I took out a jug from my pack and offered it to the troll, who readily dropped her jar in my hand and kicked back the jug, I pretended to take a small sip.

「Ahhhhh so good! Hey, hey, you're not half bad you know! Let me take ya direct to the shrine okay? You'll get lost otherwise! 」The troll said, grabbing my hand and leading me on.

「Oi! Reimu! Wake up already! You know I spread my mist all around, ain't you gonna do your job and exterminate me huh?! 」The trolled yelled aloud, presumably announcing our presence.

「Yes, yes, just give me a moment you horrible drunk this won't be long, I'm waiting for some-」The Shrine Maiden abruptly stopped, dropping a drink tray she had been carrying.

「Suika...」Reimu said, her strange stick ornament suddenly appearing in her hand and her eyes looking like death,「Step away from him this instant.」

「Oh? Or what? You'll do your job for once?」The troll said, grabbing my arm a little more aggressively 「Perhaps I should just take my snack and go then? You know, we've already shared drinks, him and I, maybe I'll keep him around a little-」But she didn't get to finish that sentence, instead, a black and white blur slammed into her head and sent her thrashing into the trees, followed by a red and white blur that zoomed past me.

What followed was what I can only describe as a completely localized meteor shower, as a cacophony of radiant lights completely lit up the sky and a good portion of the forest was torn asunder. Really, I should have run in the opposite direction as fast as I could, but something about the display was so alluring. Before long though, it was over, and the Shrine Maiden came walking back, the troll bruised and battered in tow. The ever present mist also seemed to dissipate.

「Wahhh! Reimu-San is so mean!」The troll cried.

「Shut up! Your the one who was dragging a human along and what's more, you stole MY sake didn't you! You highway man! And as for you! 」The Shrine Maiden said, pulling on my robe.「 When I said not to get involved with random woman, that included Youkai! 」she muttered in a bitter tone, I assume saying something about not sharing her deliveries with trolls, but it's not like I had a choice! Well, no point in being bitter about it I guess.

Despite the meeting getting off to a rough start, we spent the rest of the day drinking and admiring the now clear sky. The Shrine Maiden sat very close to me and always kept between me and the troll, but I guess her job is to protect humans from fairy tale creatures? How diligent!
