It's become more accepted in society.
All the kids that felt afraid to admit they like anime found other hidden normies that like it too.

Most of the time you can bring it up in casual conversation about what shows in each season are going well.

The Japanese tend to look down upon it still if they find out anime is your main reason for getting into Japanese culture and if you admit that you don't regularly enjoy anime they tend to be impressed or happy about it.

As a whole social media has projected otaku media to become more easily accessed and being able to find others eho have your very specfic otaku specialty, but anything outside of anime, counsule video games, and j-pop is seen as negative and deviant by normies.

I hate to say it, but it's gotten better in the aspect of being normalized socially and in the capitalist market.

When I hear normies talking about certain animes or aspects of Japan or movies from Japan while never gripping the meaning the producers or creators intended them to walk away with or making a big deal about something I've known about for years while every one else gets exhaberated over my stomach turns knowing they've stolen the only thing that I could emerce myself in with a small comminity like /jp/ that analyzes or commits to the subjects with passion properly.
