One afternoon when Shanghai and I were on a walk in the forest we met some fairies playing tag. They invited us to join in and even offered us some tea. It was really good, and I had a good time playing with them. I had such a good time, in fact, that I guess I got tired and sat down to take a rest. But I fell asleep!

When I woke up I was very sore, and very embarrassed. I couldn't find Shanghai anywhere and I got worried. I went back to my house only to find that it had been burned down. There was nothing left. Strangely, the yard was very overgrown; the grass had to have been as tall as me. The smell was intense, and I started sneezing in between crying. All my dolls and magic books, gone. Who could have done that?

I went to Marisa's house, but it was empty, not just as if nobody was home. There were no books, no furniture, nothing in the pantry. The dust lay impossibly thick everywhere. My sneezing got worse. From an upstairs bedroom window I saw something on the ground behind the house. When I got outside again and took a look, puffing and wheezing, I found that the thing was a grave marker that had fallen over in the spongy earth. I had never seen such a thing in all the times I'd been there. Gathering my strength, I lifted up the crudely cut stone and inspected it. It held just two initials, "MK".
