Didn't R07 say something like Shion surviving would be too "hopeful" of an ending so early in the story. Despite the tragedy of the chapter, at least K1 would have someone to lean on.
So instead she died, and focus was put on the curse at the end.

I love Meakashi but one thing I wish it had more of was some details on the Sonozaki family's treatment of Shion after we learn about the twin switch. Would've also been nice to hear Mion's perspective on it, although we generally know the guilt she feels.
