If I'm not mistaken, the shinigami is a rather recent addition to Japanese mythology and doesn't exist as such in neither shinto nor buddhism - it's pretty much an assimilated version of the grim reaper concept, minus the whole black plague cultural luggage.
So yeah, the Japanese are pretty much free to set up whatever image they like as the grim reaper - although ironically the most religious don't acknowledge the idea at all.

What are you even talking about? Komachi was a pleasant person in PoFV and she remained pleasant in SWR. Aside from kicking all of her quirks up to 11 she's not terribly different.
