Depends on how you get the pieces. I'd personally rank the systems like

>6, 9, 10, and 16's score-based
>11's not dying to boss attacks
>13, 17, and 18's dropped by key enemies
>7 and 8's point-item-based
>UFOs
You might point out that gathering point items isn't that much different from auto-collecting, but it just feels way less fun to me. You lose out on the ability to put spell card bonuses, graze, and PoC value to use compared to raw score-based extends, but you also don't get the value flexibility, reward for routing, or ability to trade bombs for lives like in 14. It kind of encourages you to use the PoC more, but doesn't feel like the games are built around it.
