I played games with furigana instead. Then moved onto things with full voice acting.

I'm six months in and about 3500 anki cards later I can at least understand the general idea behind most of a VN protagonist's monologues, but there's still a whole fucking lot of words I haven't seen once in my life before.

Though at a point I stopped caring that much about words I didn't know, so I don't autistically look everything up. I'd rather just improve my comprehension with what I do know for now and deliver everything else from context. When I did look things up I remembered the kanji for about a night, and then promptly forgot about them.

At least I can read relatively easy material smoothly, so that's some progress.
